The Okanagan Upcycling Resource Society's Upcycling Centre which operated in Penticton for 20 months needs to find a new location.

Located at 180 Industrial Avenue West in the Penticton & District Society for Community Living (PDSCL) yard, from November 2014 to June 2016, the Upcycling Centre provided used building materials to South Okanagan citizens and contractors at very reasonable prices.

All stock for the Upcycling Centre was donated from local building contractors, retail suppliers and local citizens who wanted to keep useful materials out of local landfills.

The Okanagan Upcyling Resource Society also has an ongoing agreement with the RDOS to salvage salable materials that can be sold at the Upcycling Centre. It was determined during its twenty months of operation, that redirecting used building materials was a viable business venture and a win-win for all South Okanagan residents.

The project generated enough cash to  provide wages for four employees, build a cash surplus, purchase a delivery van, build a portable office and accumulate assets. The Upcycling Centre also hosted several Repair Cafes, where furniture and appliances, dull knives and damaged clothing were restored. In addition to reducing the footprint on local landfills,  creating jobs, and helping residents realize the potential and value in reusing materials, the Centre operated without any government subsidies. Successful outcomes proved that the Upcycling Centre increased local resiliency and provided a valuable sustainable service for the South Okanagan.

Now, due to building development at PDSCL, the Upcyling Centre has to find a new location. The challenge is to secure an affordable site that can accommodate the storage and retail of used building materials. The Board would like to extend their gratitude to all who helped make the Upcycling project a success, and encourage the publics  continued support in the growth and development of the Upcycling Centre. Suggestions for a new location can be passed on to the Okanagan Upcycling
